Chichester College’s £6m plans for new building

After three years of waiting Chichester College has finally been able to put forward plans for a new construction building.
The £6m plans are to demolish the existing building to the west of the college’s existing campus at Avenue de Chartres. This would make way for the brand new four-storey Construction Teaching Facility.
If the plans are given the go ahead all students currently at the construction building in Terminus Road, Chichester, would move to the new building.
A previous proposal to develop on the same site was given approval in 2009 but a funding boost, initially thought to be available from the Learning and Skills Council, did not happen.
The college’s chief operating officer Julie Sleeman said: “I am really excited about the plans. It’s a huge step forward for the college especially after the disappointment of not securing the funding from the LSC.”
The new plans would see the demolition of a group of single and two storey buildings for the new building, which would have a roof level plant room.
The new building would provide teaching facilities for a range of building construction skills that include a new reception/entrance to the site with a new canopy and signage and associated hard and soft landscaping works.
The existing car parking would be reduced by 32 car parking spaces. Motorcycle parking would be maintained and increased by 18 new spaces, and new sheltered cycle parking would be provided for 35 bicycles. The vehicle access arrangements would not be affected by this application.
The college has said the new CTF would improve the general appearance of the area, which has suffered from poor investment and confused wayfinding. The buildings being replaced are generally of poor quality though not all fit this category.
The students would be on the main campus and be able to access support services such as careers, finance, counselling, Learning Resources Centre, the Student Union.
During the construction phase, the building site would be a real-life learning environment for the construction students. The student and staff cohort on the site is expected to remain largely unchanged.
Presently 288 students attend each day in the existing buildings, of which 208 are accommodated in the Terminus Road campus. The staffing numbers 48 of which 33 are attached to the Terminus Road site.
Staff and students largely park their vehicles on the main campus. Therefore, the total number of students and staff to be accommodated in the new building will be 288 students and 48 staff each day.
